Constructive 2024 - BUILDING CONNECTIONS, BUILDING BETTER TOGETHER
A chance to come together as a sector to network, collaborate and generate ideas – because together, we build better.
Diamonds are made under pressure. As we navigate challenging economic conditions, now is the time to advocate for, and implement change. Now more than ever we need to work together to come up with bold and creative solutions to help business and the sector successfully navigate change.
Constructive 2024 will be bigger and more impactful than ever before. We know there is still a lot of work needed to address the country’s housing and infrastructure deficit - affordability remains the perennial issue. Could new models of financing play a part in unlocking infrastructure to allow more affordable housing and how do we strip away some of the red tape holding us back? And where to next with social housing if delivery of this is moved away from government – what does this mean for our sector?
The resilience of our cities – where, what, and how to build is a major area of focus – we’ll take a deep dive into the growing need for resilient, sustainable urban development.
We also explore how integrating cutting-edge technology and innovations can improve efficiency, safety, and profitability and push boundaries in residential and commercial construction. Our first ever Innovation Showcase will bring these to life.
Our international keynote speaker and trend forecaster, Michael McQueen, will explore the key technological trends set to shape the coming years for the construction sector with a specific focus on generative AI and its transformational potential for building design and functionality. He will also speak to how evolving consumer and societal expectations around sustainability will redefine the competitive landscape and how to meaningfully engage next-generation customers, apprentices. and employees.
In addition to being able to network with the best and brightest in building and construction, this year’s Constructive will provide access to a range of practical tools, and best practice guides to help you take action, and create positive change in your business.
It's time to drive the conversation, get practical and build the future.

Climatic architecture
Join us for the Robert Garland Treseder Lecture featuring Philippe Rahm
Architecture and urbanism were traditionally based on climate and health, with exposure to wind and sun, and variations in temperature and humidity influencing the forms of cities and buildings. These fundamental aspects of urban planning and architecture were largely ignored in the second half of the 20th century due to the widespread use of fossil fuels, which have contributed to the greenhouse effect and global warming.
The fight against climate change now compels architects and urban designers to seriously reconsider climatic factors in their designs, emphasizing greater consideration of the local climate and energy resources. In the face of the 21st century's climatic challenges, we propose resetting our discipline to focus on its intrinsic atmospheric qualities. Air, light, heat, and humidity are real building materials, and convection, thermal conduction, evaporation, emissivity, and effusivity should become design tools for shaping architecture and cities. Through dialectical materialism, we can revolutionize aesthetic and social values.
Philippe Rahm is the 2024 Treseder Fellow at the Faculty of Architecture, Building, and Planning. This Fellowship enables artists, business innovators, designers, policy leaders, start-ups, architects, and scholars dedicated to the development and promotion of design-based innovation to visit Melbourne.
Biography - Philippe Rahm is a Swiss architect, principal in the office of “Philippe Rahm architects,” based in Paris, France. His work, which extends the field of architecture from the physiological to the meteorological, has received an international audience in the context of sustainability. His recent work includes the first prize for the Farini competition (60 ha) in Milan in 2019, the 70 hectares Central Park in Taichung, Taiwan, completed in December 2020, a 2700 m2 Exhibition architecture for Luma Foundation in Arles, France. He has held professorships at GSD Harvard University, Cornell, Princeton or Columbia University where Philippe is currently the Dean’s Visiting Associate Professor. He is a tenured associate professor at the National Superior School of Architecture in Versailles, France (ENSA-V). In 2020, he is the curator of the exhibition “Natural History of Architecture” at the Pavillon de l’Arsenal in Paris. “Climatic architecture”, a monographic book is published at Fall 2023.

International Conference on Noise and Vibration Engineering (ISMA2024)
The 2024 Leuven Conference on Noise and Vibration Engineering will be held September 9-11. It is the 31st international conference in a series of annual courses and biennial conferences on structural dynamics, modal testing and noise and vibration engineering, organised by the KU Leuven Department of Mechanical Engineering. In good tradition, ISMA2024 will join forces again with the International Conference on Uncertainty in Structural Dynamics - USD2024, which will be at its 10th edition. A single registration will grant online access to both conferences.
The conference provides a forum for engineers, researchers, and other professionals active in the field of modelling, analysing, testing and improving the noise and vibration characteristics of mechanical and mechatronic systems and civil structures. A strong emphasis is on combining excellent academic research activities with top-notch industrial innovations and applications. The conference combines expertise in the ‘noise’ and ‘vibration’ fields by stressing common measurement, modelling, analysis and control technologies and leveraging upon new paradigms such as digital twin, model-based system engineering and artificial intelligence. The meeting will provide a further impetus to the cross-fertilization of ideas in both areas.
The conference program will include keynote lectures, tutorials and invited and contributed papers in specialised areas of noise and vibration engineering and structural dynamics. The focus of the conference is on experimental and numerical methods, with special attention to recent applications in vehicle, machine and civil engineering. Fields with a strong interaction between noise and vibration behaviour will be stressed. Modal analysis and structural dynamic testing remain one of the backbones of the conference, and herein we would like to emphasise limiting factors such as product and test uncertainty as well as applications in the field of smart monitoring and damage assessment. The continuous link between real assets and their digital counterparts is also exploited in the digital twin, enabling noise and vibration research innovations and industrial applications.

Stories of Earth: Echoes in Architecture - A one-day event intended to reframe, reconnect and restore
In his 2024 essay, ‘Enough? Architecture and the Sufficiency Imperative’, Professor Daniel Barber asks: In its quest for efficiency and performance, sustainable architecture has only made us want more—more buildings, more extraction, more stuff. What if architects crafted new desires, within planetary limits?
As we hurtle towards exceeding those planetary limits, join some of the world’s most celebrated architects as they present a hopeful vision for a purpose-led profession – rooted in a return to people, place and planet, over profit alone.
Inspired by the richness and remoteness of the Australian outback, four global greats join some of Australia’s most respected architects to explore a common theme: our connection to earth.
These stories not only find expression in architecture, but review how to build a common future for humanity; for those with land as well as the landless; where there is poverty or privilege, and for the urban, rural and isolated.
We are bringing together international stories of responsible architecture because we know architecture can create new desires within our planetary limits.
Fully catered event on the day.
**Up to 5 formal hours of CPD**
Speakers:
Marina Tabassum
The first confrontation in professional life surfaced with the commodification of architecture as I witnessed the global tendency towards instant gratification and industrially-produced anthropogenic materials devised to standardise the entire globe. The perennial quest for identity that was a struggle since childhood seemed more diluted with high-flying capitalist culture.
Niall Mclaughlin
The way to make good architecture – that is, to respond with dignity to the relentless jostling of theoretical positions and of the buildings themselves – can be to say very little indeed and just to enquire into what a particular place might, by way of buildings, most need.
Rick Joy
What we're trying to do is be very honest with ourselves and really respectful of the place, so we can come to some truth and work from that moment.
Marusa Zorec
There are places that we return to again and again because by inhabiting them we rediscover something essential about ourselves.
Uncle Dean
Culture is life, without it, we have nothing and become lost.

fib Symposium 2024
Kia ora and a warm welcome to Aotearoa for the fib Symposium 2024. The sequence of devastating earthquakes that Christchurch experienced in 2010 and 2011 destroyed the city centre and hundreds of buildings, schools, hospitals and essential infrastructure were demolished. Yet, the city re-established essential functions quickly and in the last decade, major reconstruction implementing seismic resilient designs and innovative technologies has seen Christchurch rebuilt.
The title of the Symposium is ReConStruct - Resilient Concrete Structures and will be hosted by Concrete New Zealand – Learned Society.
It is our pleasure to host the fib 2024 Symposium for the first time in Aotearoa New Zealand, and we invite you to join us in Christchurch. Known as the Garden City, Christchurch will be in the throes of Spring - its most beautiful season.
In addition to resilient structures, sustainable design is a key focus with New Zealand committed to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. In fact, Concrete NZ has recently published its 2050 Net-Zero Carbon Roadmap. The conference will provide an opportunity to share expertise and develop strategies to achieve these goals as an international community.
We look forward to showcasing to the global concrete community, many examples of excellence in the field of resilience to natural hazards, innovative concrete technologies, and seamless implementation between research and industry. Having been tested by nature, Christchurch is perfectly pitched to host this international event, as it emerges from testing times.
