Webinar - Fire rated systems
Presented by Fireshield
Fireshield Technical Director Blair Rouse will join us to give an overview on the range of available systems to provide fire rated systems for internal and external timber claddings and linings.
Blair will discuss the different varieties of fireproof coatings and impregnation systems available as well as specific design options for timber, topics covered include:
Group Surface ratings for Interior/Exterior Timber
• Recognise the importance of correctly specifying the correct coating/system requirements for timber substrates.
• Identify the surface rating required for timber substrates to ensure the design complies with relevant
NZBC fire requirements and industry standards
• Design considerations when using fire rated timber substrates.
Façade cladding requirements for timber claddings and current test requirements
• Fire rating options for exterior use
• Limitations of exterior use of timber
• Design considerations for exterior Type A timber claddings.
Specific Design Options for Fire Protection
• Design Solutions and Case studies.

Each webinar covers the following:
Webinar – Wednesday 9 March
Carbon and the New Zealand building industry
Webinar – Wednesday 16 March
Compliance and calculating building carbon footprints
Webinar – Wednesday 23 March
Carbon challenges
Webinar – Wednesday 30 March
Design and build a low-carbon building
We look at practical solutions to reducing a building’s carbon footprint.
Presented by Greg Burn NZCD (Arch) – Diploma in Business (Marketing) – Structure Ltd and David Dowdell PhD – Principal Scientist Sustainability, BRANZ, this webinar series provides guidance for architects, designers, builders, building consent officers and other building practitioners on how to meet the carbon challenges for new residential buildings.
Each webinar covers the following:
Webinar – Wednesday 9 March
Carbon and the New Zealand building industry
- We explain why we need to act now to reduce carbon emissions and the role that the building and construction industry plays.
- We explore the impacts of climate change and what we need to do to meet NZ’s legal commitments to ensure global temperature rise does not exceed 1.5o C.
- We explain the NZ construction sector’s emissions and our carbon ‘budget’ – that is, the maximum amount of carbon we can emit if we want to stay within the 1.5o C warming threshold.
Webinar – Wednesday 16 March
Compliance and calculating building carbon footprints
- We look at the inter-related topics of compliance and how to calculate carbon footprints.
- We explain MBIE’s Building for Climate Change programme for both embodied and operational carbon, and explore the proposed new compliance pathways and timeframes for emissions reduction, which will become mandatory by 2024.
- We look at the carbon footprint of case-study houses and explain the basics of life cycle assessment (LCA), including typical LCA workflow, modules and schedule of quantities.
- The webinar provides an overview of BRANZ carbon footprinting and LCA tools – LCAQuick, LCAPlay, CO2NSTRUCT, CO2RE, and CO2MPARE – plus NZGBC’s Homestar Embodied Carbon Calculator (HECC).
Webinar – Wednesday 23 March
Carbon challenges
- We explore some of the challenges we face in reducing carbon emissions.
- We compare the relative contribution of embodied and operational emissions over different service lives – NZGBC (90 years), and Paris Agreement (30 years). Which is more important?
- We also look at the challenges in developing carbon footprinting tools that are verified and have an underlying consistent dataset.
- Other topics covered include the challenges of build cost (affordability), MDH, current high framing ratios, thermal bridges, insulation issues, airtightness, ventilation, how to design out waste, issues with site and subdivision, and, finally, how to change current construction practices and occupant behaviour.
Webinar – Wednesday 30 March
Design and build a low-carbon building
We look at practical solutions to reducing a building’s carbon footprint.
- “What rules of thumb, if followed in design, can help to lower the carbon footprint of our houses?”
- “What magnitude of carbon reduction could be expected compared to business-as-usual?”
- Construction R-values
- Ground floor construction
- House shape (area/perimeter ratio)
- Window to wall ratio
- House orientation and distribution of windows
- House size
